Easy Email Marketing: 10 Simple Steps For Creating And Sending Marketing Email Your Customers Will Love

Step 6: Make It Mobile Friendly

Welcome to Step 6. Congratulations! Your email is looking good. You’ve come up with a Message, an Action and a Hero Image your customers will love. But they need to be able to read it on any device. In this step you’ll learn how to easily do that.

If It Looks Good On Phones...

It will look good on computers and tablets, too. And since phones are the primary computer for most of the world, we need to focus on your email looking its best on small screens. The good news is that it’s easy to do.

A Single Column To Rule Them All

Okay, that was an unnecessary “Lord of the Rings” reference (ask your local nerd), but I want to make a point that you will remember. When you log on to your email service to choose a template for your email, you’re going to be tempted by a huge number of options to choose from. Photos on the left with text on the right, double-column, image galleries, and on and on and on.

Do this. Choose only one: the single column.

Think of how you use apps like Instagram or Facebook. They’re easily scrollable single columns for a reason: because that works best on phones. The single column is the one template to rule them all because it guarantees your customers will see your message in the best way possible no matter what size screen they read it on.

But the fancy ones look so, well, fancy! I know, I like fancy, too. But take it from someone who has been doing this email thing for a very long time. The fancy templates never look good on small screens. And we want as many people on as many devices as possible to be able to read your awesome email and buy your stuff.

An Image Fit For A Phone

Good news: As long as your Hero Image (from Step 5) is the size your email service requires, its software will probably automatically resize your image to look great on phones. Nice!

If not, maybe consider another email marketing service. Or resize your Hero Image for phones using the tips from Step 5.

The Ideal Email

Here’s an example of what I consider an ideal email. Yours should look something like this, but it’s okay if it doesn’t match exactly. You may choose to use only a Hero Image with words on it. Or maybe text below your Hero Image. Or even only text (you rebel). Do what’s best for you and your customers. Just make sure it’s a single column like this.

You’ll notice this example includes all of what you learned about on Step 4 and Step 5. One Hero Image, a short Message and an Action.

And a white background. Always white.

Why A White Background?

Just like the bulletproof fonts you learned about in Step 4, white is the bulletproof background color that works in all email software. Gmail is notorious for changing custom background colors to white, so starting with white guarantees you’ll never have a problem. Besides, everything looks good on a white background.

Next Is Step 7

You’re entering the home stretch! By now your email should be looking good. Remember, you can always review the steps if you need to.

Next we’ll review and prepare to launch your email. Exciting!
