Why You Should Be A Podcast Guest
Podcasters Need You
Being a guest on podcasts is one of the easiest ways to spread the word on your product or service.
Becoming a guest is easier than ever. There over 2 million podcasts out there, and most are desperate for guests.
But I can’t! You can. I’m a total introvert and I’ve been on many. The one-on-one format of most podcasts is perfect for those of us who aren’t outgoing. Extroverts, too.
Even better, podcasters are looking for guests with the specific knowledge and experience that only you have.
Think about an aspect of your business that people find interesting. The story of growing your business. The hard-earned wisdom you’ve won. The crazy way you came up with an idea for a product.
That’s the conversational gold podcasters want.
How To Get On Podcasts
Ok, but how do you get on a show?
Because there are so many podcasts, it’s easier than you might think.
I’ve been using MatchMaker.fm to find podcasts and introduce myself. The service makes it easy.
There are other services out there. Some are free. Some are paid. Google around and find one that works for you.
You can also open your favorite podcasting app and start browsing. Look for shows that focus on the topics you want to talk about.
Target small and medium sized podcasts at first, you’ll get a much better response.
Then reach out with an email. You can usually find a form on their website contact page.
Here’s the format I use.
Hi [host name]
I hope you are well.
I enjoyed your episode with [guest name]. I learned a lot.
I’m [your name], [what you do]. I’d like to be a guest on your show, [show name], to share [your topic].
Here are the highlights:
Relevant highlight.
Relevant highlight.
Relevant highlight.
I’d be honored to partner with you and explore ways of customizing these topics so they suit your listeners perfectly.
Looking forward to serving you and your listeners.
Warm Regards,
[your name]
Does It Work?
I’ve sent twenty-seven emails like that this year. So far I’ve been on thirteen podcasts, with five more in the works.
I’ve spoken to hosts in England, Ireland, India, Canada and North America. They’ve all been wonderful and accommodating and genuinely interested in what I have to say.
Podcasting Equipment
As for podcasting equipment, don’t worry about it. If you have a USB mic, by all means use it. All of the shows I’ve been on were happy to conduct the interview with smartphones, AirPods or whatever you have.
Free Word Of Mouth
Guesting on podcasts works as a cost-free marketing technique for several reasons.
First, and most obvious, it puts your business and your message in front of more people at no cost to you.
Second, it gives you credibility in the eyes of, well, just about everyone. I continue to be surprised at the response I get when people find out I’ve guested on podcasts. It’s an absolute credibility magnifier.
Third, and most important in my mind, being interviewed sharpens the stories you tell about your business. It forces you to make them compelling and interesting and able to share them at a moments notice.
That’s great cost-free marketing.
